Dr. Irving Harold Smelson was born in Newark and lived in Elizabeth and Westfield until he retired in 2012. He graduated from Tulane University and received his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He completed his Psychiatric residency at Georgetown University in 1963. In addition to private practice, he served as Department Chairman at Elizabeth General Hospital. He was clinical associate professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as well as Seton Hall Graduate School of Medical Education. His responsibility was to teach medical students and resident physicians. He was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He leaves Dorothy, his beloved wife of 60 Years, his daughter Dr. Bari Smelson (Gurmeet Kanwal) and son Dr. David Smelson (Jennifer Hoorter) and grandchildren, Noah, Adam, Ethan, and Matthew.
